European Beauty Haul Part 1 - Essence, P2, Catrice, Make Up Factory & Astor

Long time, no...write? I was in Germany and France for a while with my family, dealing with the loss of a much loved pet and am now experiencing camera issues, so it's no surprise that SSD has suffered a little as a result. Luckily for all you beauty lovers, I was thoughtful enough to take some basic photos of my first purchases while still in Germany so while I'm sorting my camera out, I thought I'd share part one of my European beauty haul with you all.

1. I found these two in a shop called Douglas (how German does that sound...not!) which was basically a beauty shop. I picked up Isadora's 'Creme de la Creme' after reading and conversing about it ages ago on a blog so when I spotted the Isadora stand I hunted it down. I also picked up BeYu's Shimmering Top Coat in '743'. I love this because the glitter is holographic (my favourite type of glitter polish) but the chunks are square instead of circular or hexagon shaped.

2. Here we have Essence's 'Mrs and Mr Glitter', 'The Boy Next Door' and 'That's What I Mint'. I absolutely LOVE Mrs and Mr Glitter. Just before going away I had seen photos of mermaid-esque nails on Instagram and when I saw this top coat I had visions of creating my own. The Boy Next Door is a nice, shimmery, vibrant blue and to say these polishes are all so cheap, I was impressed with the wear of them.

3. I purchased the P2 Pure Color lipstick in the shade 'Kärtner strasse', which is an everyday dark nude shade and perfect for people like myself who have slightly darker lips than average. I also picked up the Astor Color Last VIP lipstick in the shade Bubbly, which is a gorgeous vibrant pink shade and was probably my most worn holiday colour in the end. I also picked up this P2 profi concealer palette because concealer palettes have always intrigued me but are rare here in the UK. I have only used the green and pinky-purple concealers but so far I've been fairly impressed with their coverage and staying power. The Catrice 'Absolute Nude' eyeshadow palette interested me because there are so many UD Naked dupes out there and I'm a sucker for nude eyeshadow. I purchased all of these things (plus the Essence polishes and the P2 polishes below) from DM. Finally for make-up, I picked up the Make Up Factory Automatic Eyeliner in '24' from Müller (that shop is insane) and fell in love with it instantly. I also went back and picked up shade 21, but that will be in part 2.

4. Given that drugstore products were SO much cheaper in Germany than they would ever be here in the UK, and also given that my holiday money was pretty much entirely for feeding my beauty addiction, I went a little bit crazy polish-wise. I picked up two of the P2 Rich Color + Care polishes in 'So Fresh' (green) and 'So Cool' (blue), as well as one of the Color Victim polishes in the shade 'Artful' (PERFECT with Essence's 'Mrs and Mr Glitter') and one of the Last Forever polishes in the shade 'Lovely Moment'.

5. P2 also had a huge range of nail care type products so I picked up their Anti-Split coat, two of their Quick Dry Sprays (there were only two left, and they were so cheap...) and their Nail Food Ananas.

I'll be writing up proper reviews of the products I've actually tried soon but do let me know if there are any you'd like me to review. Have you tried any of these products? Let me know in the comments below because I've missed you!

Hidden Gems

Hi guys :) So, in the midst of this crazy British heatwave recently I haven't really been posting at all. My poor little blog has been seriously neglected and so has my make-up bag. I can't be the only one who cringes at the thought of a full face of make-up in such heat, can I?

My mum and I had a wander around our local Asda on Monday and I picked up a couple of bargains that I thought I'd share...

I love having a mooch about the jewellery and cosmetics sections of supermarkets. I often find a nice necklace in Asda and it's not a secret that I'm a fan of their £1.75 own brand nail polishes.

This trio of ethnic-themed adjustable (so suitable for all finger sizes, hurrah!) cost either £4 or £5. I love finding rings like these to add to my collection and throw on with a simple outfit. Rings are definitely my jewellery weakness. I spotted these and just had to have them. £5 (maximum) for three rings is a decent price and I'm looking forward to wearing these.

I've been hunting for a necklace like this for SO long but nowhere seems to sell them. I spotted this and picked it up straight away. I love everything about it, but mainly I love the fact that it looks a bit like bunting. I have issues, OK? ;) This necklace set me back £5 and made my inner material girl very happy indeed.

Finally, I picked up two polishes. The first, a golden, metallic toned colour is called 'Beach Bum' and could be described as 'metallic sand'. I've already worn this and while the colour is gorgeous, the fact that it's metallic leaves it rather prone to streaking. I also picked up another Matt Finisher, which is just a plain matte topcoat. I very rarely do matte nails, so for only £1.75 it makes sense to pick up a cheaper polish than a more expensive one. If you're a student or just on a budget, I definitely recommend you check out the George range of polishes (but NOT other cosmetics).

Have you found any hidden gems recently? Feel free to share below in the comments :)

Meet the Blogger: house in the sand

Hi guys! Today I have an extra-special post for you. I've been chatting to music blogger Vanessa for a while now and when I tweeted about the idea of interviewing a blogger, she jumped at the chance. I love her blog because it's a brilliant example of where hard work can get you. So, without further ado, I'm thrilled to introduce you to Vanessa...

1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your blog
I’m a big music fan from the South of Germany. I live by the motto "the only way you fail is when you don’t react” (lyrics written by Jim Kroft) and believe in the saying "what you put out in the world is what you’ll get back".

The thought behind my blog is it to get unpopular bands/solo artists a bigger fan base and to put them into the spotlight they deserve. Also it’s kind of the road into my future as a journalist.

2. Why did you decide to start your blog?
I decided to start blogging on a really boring Wednesday afternoon. I have been a writer for quite a while and I wanted to improve it, connect with people and get my thoughts 'out there'. After blogging for about six months the idea of becoming a music blog popped into my mind and well... here I am.

3. What is your proudest blogging achievement?
That is a really good question! I think it was when I got my press card for a Tom Odell concert because of my blog. (You need press cards to take your DSLR camera with you here in Germany.) But I also love the 'smaller' moments where great musicians just tell me how much they like what I do. That’s a really wonderful feeling!

4. Is there anything you dislike about the blogging world?
Yes, the jealousy. I’ve experienced that from the very beginning when some musicians helped me out and their fans took it completely wrong and started to talk not the nicest things about me and my blog. It was kind of depressing for me because I didn’t (and still don’t) really understand why you would get jealous about something you could do yourself. Everyone can blog. Everyone can do what they love.

5. What are your hopes for the future of your blog?
I hope that I can grow with this blog and do lots of cool things and never quit because of the down phases. And I hope that I will keep on meeting more wonderful people and stay in contact with the ones I already met. A few more readers would be quite nice too, haha!

And since mine is a beauty blog after all...

6. Tell us a bit about any German beauty brands you can think of or that you like
The first one that comes to my mind is the brand called 'essence' – it’s a drug store brand and basically offers everything you need – eye shadows, eye liners, brushes, make up, nail polishes, etc. Their limited editions are my favourites because they’re always really creative and the products are mostly worth a buy.

Another brand I really like is called 'alverde' which is a natural cosmetics brand. They also cover the whole beauty section. I personally love their blushes and lipsticks. High quality – affordable prices.

7. Are you into beauty? Which are your favourite products if so?
I definitely am into beauty. But I used to care about make up a lot more a while ago, nowadays I care a lot about skin care and keeping my skin and hair healthy.

Besides that I’m really into nail polishes (that’s definitely a reason why I love your blog!). I totally suck at nail design but I love painting my nails. My favourite nail polish brand would be Essie – I love their colours and how long the polishes stay on your nails.

8. Are there any other blogs you would recommend?
Yours, definitely!

I love the blog 'Dirty Little Secret' written by my friend Ola, a beautiful model with an amazing taste in clothes. Whenever I need some inspiration I just head over to her blog.

Another blog I really love is 'London Calling' by a great friend of mine called Jana. Her blog is basically one big bubble of inspiration. Jana and I share the same interests (music and photography) so it’s always really nice to see what she’s up to.
There are lots of other great blogs which I will be introducing on my blog soon.

9. How can my readers get in touch with you if they want to know more?
Either they can come over and visit my “house in the sand“ and discover some really talented musicians, talk to me on Twitter or see what I’m up to on Facebook. You can find all the links on my contact page.

So, please head over and say hi to Vanessa :-) I'll leave all of her links below underneath my own. If you have any more questions for her leave them in the comments below and I'll be back next week with some more beauty themed posts.

Falling out of love with Nails inc

Part of me really hates that I'm writing this post. Long-time readers of my blog or followers on Instagram will know that I've always been a big Nails inc fan. You may also remember that last month I posted my first 'In the Magazines' and mentioned how excited I was that InStyle magazine was giving away three different NI shades. And I really was, until this happened...

Yes, that is my carpet. Yes, that is an NI polish. And yes, somehow the glass bottle has come apart round the top. It didn't smash, it literally came clean apart. It went all over the products in the top left picture. Thanks to a fabulous girl I met at uni, I managed to get the majority of the polish out of the carpet (eventually) but some of the products are still covered in the stuff.

Anyway, Nails inc don't have a customer service line that operates at weekends (this incident occurred on a Friday evening) and their website tells you to send complaints in via email. Not that it was easy to find out how to send a complaint... I had to google it in the end. For anyone wondering, it's under Terms and Conditions on their website. This section also states your complaint "will be acknowledged within 3 working days". So, I emailed in my complaint and attached the above photo along with an explanation of what happened on the 3rd of May. I finally received a response on the 14th of May. That is definitely not 3 working days.

My reply (which, to be fair, was from a lady who sounded genuinely lovely) stated a couple of relevant things:
1. "This is the first problem we have encountered with our polishes breaking without force" - False, I know someone who experienced the same problem AND emailed to complain.
2. "I am pleased to send you a fabulous gift box full of goodies worth over £200 including bestselling products and just-launched items as well as replacing the Nails inc products you had purchased." - What a great response to receive, right? I should add here that the faulty bottle damaged products that I had also received in an online order from them that very same day, hence "products you had purchased". I was pleased with this response and thought it was very good of them to handle it so generously.

On the 20th of May, I received this package...

After doing some research, I found the total value of this box to be roughly £68. None of these products are replacements for those damaged either. So, on the same day I emailed the lady I had been in contact with to ask if I should expect another package, given that it did not match the description she gave me.

I didn't receive a response.

Because it was a week day, I tried to ring the two numbers I could find - the number she attached to her email, and the number on their website - nobody answered.

Someone finally answered the phone on Monday. I explained that I had emailed because I hadn't received the package promised and the response I received was "I'll get some additional products sent out to you today." So, I'm now waiting for a package that I'm doubtful will actually arrive. And on a side note, I've been having to get up early everyday to wait for said package because last time it arrived first thing in the morning. Because it's not an order I've placed, I can't track it or get an ETA for it. Brilliant.

I know every company has customers who unfortunately are on the receiving end of terrible customer service, but seriously. It's been over a month since my initial email and in five days it will have been a month since I received that box. I've spent a lot of money with Nails inc over the years and if you took a peek into my polish collection you'd find a whole drawer dedicated to their polishes. I doubt I'll be spending any more money with them after this experience. I certainly won't be dealing with their customer service team again anytime soon if I can avoid it, though I have a feeling I'll have to.

Have you ever experienced terrible customer service from Nails inc? Or from any other company too? Let me know in the comments below.

Recently on the nails...

1. My nails for the wedding reception mentioned in my last post. I used Essie 'Blanc', Orly 'Glowstick' and a few random brights.

2. Beach themed nails! I based these on an image I spotted on Tumblr and looking back on them I'm in love with them. The sandy colour is Essie 'Sand Tropez'. How appropriate ;-)

3. I don't necessarily get along with bright, vibrant blues like this, but there's something special about & Other Stories 'Twill Blue'.

4. Oh, how long I spent on these nails! I used my Rio nail art pens over Essie 'Blanc' and Rimmel 'Double Decker Red'. I think I prefer the white background to the red though.

5. Glitter and ombre, how exciting! I intended to wear this design to the wedding reception but when I compared the colours to my dress, they weren't bright enough. I'm still not in love with plain ombre on my own nails though.

6. Bourjois 'Amande defile' (which I can no longer open after only one use, excellent packaging there Bourjois...) with white striping over the top made for a gorgeous, pastel design that I thoroughly enjoyed wearing.

7. Orly 'Glowstick' and Nails Inc 'Portobello' with a kind of tribal design... making bright and neon a little bit 'edgier'?

8. Rimmel's 'Tangerine Dream' with white stripes and plain rhinestones. This is another design based on an image I saw (this time on Instagram) though I'm not convinced the rhinestones look brilliant on shorter nails. Not a bad design though.

Please let me know if you'd like a tutorial on any of these designs! I have plenty of time and polish on my hands at the moment, so I'd love to do some if you guys would like :)

A wedding themed FOTN

Hola guys :) Tonight I'm back to share the make-up look I went for last Saturday for my sort-of-cousin Lucy's wedding reception. You'll have to forgive my slightly vacant look in the decent quality photos... it appears neither of my parents are capable of taking photos when they say they are.

I opted for Mac's 'Girl About Town' on my lips - a gorgeous vibrant pink that, due to its Amplified formula, sticks around for hours and is totally meal-proof.

My eyebrows were a combination of Mac's 'Omega' eyeshadow and & Other Stories' 'Worcester Taupe' eyebrow pencil. I fixed them in place with Gosh's eyebrow gel which I don't find does a great deal, but in heat like we've been experiencing here in the UK anything like that is sure to help a little.

My mascara was Benefit's 'They're Real', which I know receives mixed reviews (it's either amazing or terrible) but is by far and away the best mascara I've tried.

I was given that photo printed out in A3 by a random middle-aged man during the evening. I'm still baffled.

Other products used (but not worth proper mentions) were YSL's Le Teint Touche Éclait foundation in BD40, Vichy Dermablend in Opal, YSL Touche Éclait in the lightest shade, Mac Studio Careblend Pressed in Light, YSL Blush Radiance in 2, Sleek Face Form Bronzer and Highlighter, & Other Stories  Sateen Aubergine eyeshadow quad.

Have you tried any of these products? Are any of them your favourites? Let me know in the comments below :)

Eurovision Style Round Up

A week ago today we saw Malmö host the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, a chance for Eurofans to celebrate the musical highlight of the year. But of course, this is a beauty blog, so today we're going to have a bit of a round up of the weird and wonderful styles we saw this year...

Outfit

I fell in love with Raquel from El Sueño de Morfeo's beautiful yellow dress. It complimented her skin tone perfectly and gave her a sweet, bohemian feminine look. And a special mention must go to her hair, which is pretty much the hairstyle I wore all the way through high school.

On the other hand, we have Swedish comedienne and host of this year's contest, Petra Mede, whose dress from one of the two semi finals speaks for itself. I love Petra, but seriously, this is hideous. Toilet roll holder, anybody?

Nails

Of course this could only ever be one person - the ultimate Bridezilla from Finland, Krista. I'm unsure of the exact nail design she wore on the night, but I'm confident it was something like the above photo. You all know I love nail art, and I so wish I'd had time to try out some Marry Me themed nails before the contest.

Effort

Well, we've all seen the wacky costumes of the past (Ukraine 2007, I'm looking at you) and this year saw its fair share of craziness, but there were a couple of people who made genuine effort. I kind of feel that Aliona from Moldova somehow managed to stand out with her crazy light show dress, yet at the same time not look tacky (until it turned into a fire-themed dress, that is). I'm not sure about the La Roux-esque hair, but somehow it all just works.

The 'oh dears'

Oh, Amandine, I know your song was supposed to be all arty and full of angst, but would it have been so hard to brush your hair? And as for the leather-look dress, well, I have no words.

And finally, we have Moje 3 from Serbia, who are evidently really into the pastel trend. Either that, or they got lost en route to perform at a little girl's birthday party. This is definitely a case of 'less is more', unless you want to look like a sweet shop worker pantomime character.

Did you watch Eurovision this year? Which styles caught your eye? Let me know in the comments below!

Worth Hunting Down: Orly 'Glowstick'

What? -  Orly nail polish
Shade? - Glowstick, from the Feel the Vibe collection (now discontinued, boo!)
Price? - £6.99 for 18ml
Where? - From this Ebay seller

I would describe Glowstick as the perfect highlighter yellow. And I've always liked yellow highlighters the best, so chances were I'd love the colour anyway. Whilst it's true there are other companies selling neon yellow polishes, I kind of feel that Orly really missed a trick here. With their expansion into Boots selling minis (which aren't exactly worth their price but that's another story) and with no drugstore companies selling good neon yellows, I think this shade could have been good for them.

With summer coming up, I think this is going to be one of my favourite polishes and for the £8 that I paid I definitely feel like I got my money's worth. In these photos, I applied two coats of Essie's 'Blanc' underneath to give it a proper base and found this the best way to get the most out of the colour. After all, we'd usually use a highlighter on white paper wouldn't we?

Do you like a good neon? Have you tried this or anything similar? Can you recommend a good Glowstick dupe? Let me know in the comments below!

Worth Hunting Down: Maybelline Dream Touch Blush

What? -  Maybelline Dream Touch Blush
Shades? - 02 Peach, 06 Berry, 07 Plum, 08 Apricot
Price? - £6.49 for 63 grams
Where? - Boots or Superdrug

I couldn't do a series on products worth getting your hands on without including my ultimate surprise holy grail product. I first purchased one of these on a whim because I struggle with powder blushes staying put, then was impressed with the formula so went back for a second shade. Ironically now, the first shade I bought (Berry) is pretty unloved, but the second shade (Peach) is now the product I consciously reach for the most.

I love this product and I think it's fantastic value for money. The tiniest amount goes such a long way and they are highly pigmented. If we combine this with their availability, it's a win-win.

Have you tried these blushes? What's your holy grail blush? Let me know in the comments below!

The Lipstick Conundrum

If I have two beauty obsessions, they have to be nail art and lipstick. The former has already been fairly well-documented here on my little blog, but my love for lipsticks has perhaps been sitting in second place up until now.

The thing about lipstick is this: I have an addiction. I can't help it. I need to enter lipstick rehab or something because it is definitely a bit of an issue.

Every now and then I dip into my box of rarely-used or 'special occasions only' make-up and upon hunting out an eyeliner sharpener in there recently I realised I have far too many unloved lippies sitting untouched. Sometimes it's an online order that despite hours of googling swatches just doesn't live up to the expected shade, sometimes it's just a case of ''why on earth did I buy that?" and sometimes it's purely a case of falling out of love with a product or even disliking it in the first place.

So the question is should I get rid of them or hang onto them until I can justify binning them? There's a part of me that is convinced I'll instantly want to wear it the second it's gone, but perhaps that would only happen because it had gone. Who knows?

Do you hoard any beauty products like I do? Are you also a lipstick lover? Confess all and let me know in the comments below!

Seven for Seven #1

Today we're shaking things up a bit round here in my new weekly feature 'seven for seven'. I often read a blog post or watch a video that I really think deserves more reads/views, so my aim is to share seven posts/videos with you each Sunday, the idea being a week's worth of material for you to enjoy. So, here are this week's seven for seven...

Click the blue titles to go straight to their pages :)

1. Pretty (Squared)'s 'Top 5 Best Nail Polishes For Interviews'
I loved this post for so many reasons but mainly because I think it's such a small thing that can make a real difference when presenting yourself professionally. If you're job-hunting at the moment, this is definitely worth a read.

2. Essiebutton's 'DIY Lemon & Peppermint Foot Scrub'
I enjoy a good project and I went out and made something vaguely similar to her 'recipe' (except mine was a sugar scrub) immediately after reading the post. If you're into beauty DIY or skincare then this might be right up your street.

3. The Sunday Girl's 'Soap and Glory Puffy Eye Attack Review'
I love Adrienne's blog and have done for a long time now, so chances are you'll see her links popping up on here again. As a hayfever sufferer (all year round, boo!) I am looking forward to trying this product and would never have discovered it without her review. If hayfever affects you too, go ahead and check out her review.

4. Let's MakeYuUp's 'The Nude Brigade'
Look in my make-up bag and you'll find way too many nude lipsticks, so Yu's nude-themed post was perfect for me and I'll be making a note of the shades she mentions for next time I'm browsing in Boots or Superdrug. After all, a girl can never have too many nudes right? Right! And since you agree, go ahead and have a read.

5. voussontbeauetbelle's '50 Facts About Me'
Firstly, Becca is back and I'm very excited about that. Secondly, I think we may secretly be the same person or something. Not strictly beauty related I know, but I thoroughly enjoyed this and I think you will too, so go ahead and give it a watch.

6. MammafulZo's 'The Pet Tag With Coleyyyful & Our Rabbits'
I absolutely love Zoe and Cole's channels and I've always been a bunny lover, so even though this isn't beauty related either, I loved this video and Zoe in particular is another blogger/YTer who will probably be popping up on the occasional Sunday post. And who doesn't want to watch two fluffy bunnies...? Hop on over (see what I did there?) and give it a watch.

7. Shan Murray's 'Curvy Body Problems'
A bit of a deeper post to round off the week with Shannon's open and honest post on being 'curvy'. I agreed with her post 100% and I'm sure it might set some of you off thinking too, so if you feel like you might be able to identify then head over to her blog and give her thoughtful post a read.

Do you have any blog, channel or specific post/video recommendations? Leave a link in the comments below and share with us all!
