50 Facts About Me

Hi guys :) I thought I'd pop up more of a tag style post today to break things up a bit and I decided to do the 50 facts about me one. So, get yourself comfy and here goes...

1. I'm a first year Linguistics and Phonetics student, which basically means I study language.

2. I'm also studying elective modules in Hebrew and Icelandic. Yes, I am a little bit mad for that.

3. Stand-up comedy is one of my favourite things and I even have a friend (hey, CT!) with whom I travel around Yorkshire to comedy shows with.

4. I'm technically a published author (in the book sense and everything).

5. When I was a toddler, a member of the girl band All Saints rollerbladed me over in Bridlington.

6. My favourite noise is the little squeak a happy/hungry/excited guinea pig does.

7. I have a 'thing' for collecting notepads, quirky pens, cute stationery etc... and especially stickers.

8. I've been trying to teach myself Swedish for years. Hopefully it will be a bit easier after a year studying Icelandic.

9. I'm finally seeing the incredible Josh Groban live in June and I've never been more excited for anything in my whole life.

10. I studied Spanish for five and a half years, but I've never been to Spain.

11. I went to Croatia in 2010 and it was the most beautiful place and experience I've ever been lucky enough to have.

11. I have an obsession with painting my nails/nail art.

12. My bed is a mess right now - I have four unopened series of My Family, my iPad, two bags, a purse, a make-up bag and a ton of clothes on there. Maybe I should be tidying (I should always be tidying...)

13. I can't stand melted cheese.

14. I have a bunny called Dusty and a guinea pig called Peanut.

15. I'm frequently overwhelmed by the niceness of my university friends.

16. I loved school but I absolutely hated college.

17. I'm not a fan of the new look Outlook.

18. There's so much snow here in the north that I've only left the house once since Wednesday. I didn't mind until last night.

19. When I have the time, I make my own jewellery.

20. I'm currently addicted to Pinterest.

21. I'm still getting over the cancellation of Pushing Daisies, which last aired in 2009.

22. I also like to think that somewhere, someone with all of Ned's qualities (minus the whole 'finger bringing people back from the dead but also killing them again' thing) does exist... because Ned would make the perfect human really.

23. I was in my college choir and as a result of misprinted lyrics, I still can't listen to Run by Snow Patrol without hearing ''I know we'll make it anywhere'' as ''I know we'll make it anywahere". My CT will probably say the same. :)

24. I've only ever been to three 'proper' gigs, two of which being for a folk singer.

25. I'm terrible at putting on accents other than my own, although I'm not bad at a West Country kind of accent.

26. When I was little, my two cousins and I created our own radio show and used to record it every week in our Grandma's little bedroom on a tape recorder. I still have it under my bed and it still makes me cry with laughter.

27. Similarly, my best friend (also called Rachel) and I once recorded our own 'TV show' at a sleepover. I'll probably be embarrassed by my outfit in that forever.

28. I'm a Diana Award holder and proud of it.

29. I seem to have a very forgettable name. When I first met my high school head of year I was wearing a name badge, he still called me Ruth instead, barely any of my college teachers actually called me by my name and for most of semester one, I was known as Rebecca in Icelandic.

30. I'm a huge Eurovision fan and very much looking forward to living with another as of September.

31. I'm not overly crafty, but I go through phases where I make random stuff... right now would be classed as 'one of those phases'.

32. I never buy magazines unless they have a 'free' gift that I actually want. Ironically, three of my skincare staples at the moment came from magazines as freebies.

33. I could live off pizza and pasta.

34. I'm really developing an obsession with Daughtry.

35. I'm also developing an obsession with Keane. I'm blaming this on college choir.

36. I really hate wearing socks and only do it if it's absolutely necessary. Living in the UK doesn't help this issue.

37. More than anywhere, I would love to visit Sweden, closely followed by Australia.

38. I have a bit of a 'thing' about names - I love to know the meanings and origins of names.

39. I still cry every time I watch Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin.

40. I also still cry at Tim Minchin's White Wine in the Sun.

41. I passed my driving theory and practical the first time.

42. If I could justify it, I would still buy every cute cuddly toy I see.

43. I think I've replaced cuddly toys with phone cases. It's a major weakness.

44. I seem to have inherited my parents' love of crime dramas because I generally get hooked on any that I watch.

45. I'm definitely not a shoe girl, which is probably a good thing given that my feet are very obviously different sizes.

46. I named my blog after So She Dances, one of my absolute favourite Josh Groban songs. I also made some word art with lyrics from it last night.

47. I very rarely drink alcohol, which is considered mad amongst my age group. Whatever.

48. I miss the music of my childhood. 'Pop' music is definitely much worse now.

49. I am yet to break or even fracture/sprain a bone (*touches wood*) however I did once have to have stitches in my knee. The man did it wrong and now I have stuff moving around in there. Eurgh.

50. I'm always most awake in the middle of the night, which makes early mornings quite interesting.

So there you go! I hope you enjoyed :) If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them below in the comments section because, as always, I love talking to you guys :)

It's All Peachy

A few weeks ago I mentioned the Maybelline Dream Touch Blush in Berry. Well today I'm sharing a second shade from the series with you, Peach. I initially assumed this was way too light for my complexion, but in actual fact I feel it suits me quite well and for a drugstore product, I really can't rave about it enough.

It's a super pigmented cross between a mousse and a cream blush. I had initial reservations because we all know Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse is never going to win an award for being a wonderful foundation, and I feared this would head the same way. Thankfully, not only is it super pigmented, but it's also super easy to apply and incredibly long lasting on the skin. I really struggle to find powder blushes that will stay put, but this really does last from morning to night and it has become such a staple item for me during my hectic university days.

What are your thoughts? Have you tried the Dream Touch blushes? Let me know in the comments below :)

The Orange Lip #1

Had you told me this time last year that I'd be wearing and loving an orange lip, I'd have laughed in your face. Seriously, I'd have thought you were mad. Turns out you wouldn't have been so mad, though, because that is exactly what I've been doing recently. I have a couple of products to show you, but we're starting today with Revlon's Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in 'Rendezvous'.

A few points about the product:
  • It smells nice and minty.
  • It can be twisted up, meaning that you don't only get the little nib/end that you can see in the photo.
  • The product feels moisturising and soft on the lips even hours after application.
  • Like most products, this tends to wear away over time until there's an orange ring around the edge of the lips. Attractive, much?

Now the winter months are over and we can leave behind the maroons, the purples and the deep reds, orange seems like a fabulous alternative to a fuchsia pink.

What do you think? Have you been brave enough to sport an orange lip? Let me know in the comments below :)

Another GFC one...

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

I'm sure you've all read a million and one times today, given that the bloggersphere has exploded with the news that we will soon say goodbye to Google Reader and eventually Google Friend Connect (that little blue 'join this site' button to the left). Because of this, I'm now on Bloglovin and would love it if you head over there and follow me.

When I signed into it today, it gave me the option of importing the list of blogs I follow from Google (you have to ''allow access'' but I think it's probably worth it).

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you all over there,

A new holy grail nude?

I've never been a Barry M fan. I know, I know, they're amazing etc etc, I just never understood the hype. And I've never tried one of their polishes that I thought was in any way original... until now.

Step up one of the newest polishes, Lychee...

Ignoring the little finger, which evidently needs cleaning up, you can see that Lychee is the perfect beige. It's not too yellow, not too brown, and seems to hit the balance between light and dark wonderfully. I gather this little gem has been sold out in quite a few places. I ordered mine online but the largest Boots around me had plenty in stock.

I think this is definitely going to catch on as the new blogger's favourite. I haven't seen too much about it online, but I'm fairly sure everybody loves a good nude and this is definitely a good one.

What do you think? Have you tried Lychee? Let me know in the comments below :)

'The Killing' Nail Tutorial

(If you have a bit of a thing about blood, I apologise for today's main photograph, though it might help to know that in actual fact, it was red food colouring on my back lawn... No blood was involved at all...)

So... hands up if you've ever heard of The Killing? Now leave your hands up if you've ever watched it? If you failed to raise your hand at all, or indeed withdrew it for the second question, then I urge you to try it. Arguably one of Denmark's best exports, The Killing (aka Forbrydelsen) is a crime thriller spanning three series that follows the fabulous Sarah Lund as she solves seemingly impossible murders and kidnappings. It's fascinating, and Lund is a character of such depth that you're drawn in without even realising. In fact, I kind of wish I could be her...

In fashion circles, Lund (and indeed The Killing) is most famous for her brilliantly Scandinavian jumpers, which are so popular now that Sofie Gråbøl (AKA Lund) presented one to the Duchess of Cornwall. If you are yet to bask in the glory of her jumpers, here is an example...

Even though I now own a Lund-esque coat and bag, I am still obviously not an uber-talented Danish crime fighter. I also am not willing to pay over £100 for a jumper. So, I decided to incorporate a little bit of the show into my nails...

I have to say, they're not the neatest nails I've ever shown on here, but I wanted to show you all anyway and it's such an easy design...

You will need:

1x base coat
1x top coat
1x white polish
1x black polish or nail art pen/paint

Step 1:

As usual, prepare your nails by filing, clipping, trimming or whatever you choose to do to maintain them, and then apply your base coat. This will protect your nails from the colour you're about to apply and stop them staining.

Step 2:

Apply your first coat of the white polish. You will need to do this more than once, so make sure each coat is dry before adding another. Add as many coats as you need for the colour to become opaque.

Step 3:

Starting at the tip of the nail, draw two small sideways hearts, one on each edge (you can see this in the photo above). You can do this by creating two dots of black and then joining them together in a kind of 'v' shape. Follow this by drawing a circle between these hearts.

Step 4:

Now, in the middle section of your nail, you need to draw four small hearts in the pattern that can be seen in the photo below...

Step 5:

Repeat the process of step 3 by adding the same pattern at the base of your nail and allow your nails to dry completely. Because you're using black, I'd even recommend for a full 24 hours if possible.

Step 6:

Apply your top coat. Be careful here, as seemingly dry black polish can often smudge when you apply a top coat.

Et voila! You now have fabulous Forbrydelsen themed nails. Obviously you don't have to be a fan of the show to try out this design, but it certainly helps ;)

What do you think? Can you see yourself trying out this design? Let me know in the comments below! :)
